The day started with very hard weather conditions,
it was very cold and foggy : the air temperature was about 4℃
with an incredible fog that reduced visibility to 50-60 meters maximum.
After a couple of hours of navigation finally the fog disappeared,
the sun began to warm us and we started to clearly see to the horizon
some tunas in topwater activity.
At the very beginning they were busting the surface : individual tunas isolated
that were exploding on the surface, but they were almost impossible to reach
: very fast fishes doing just a single explosion on the surface and then disappearing into the abyss.
After 30-45 minutes tunas changed their attitudes, becoming even more
difficult to reach : they were no longer bursting the surface, but swimming
very very slowly, showing us just a single fin occasionally then disappearing.
No feeding frenzy at all, only individual tunas feeding in slowmotion on bait
fish no longer than 4cm.
It was the first day for me casting the new Surfish Paulownia 220F,
that I rigged with ringed Kudako 7/0 for both belly and tail.
After a few casts without success, I got a lucky shot on a tuna that appeared
10 meters away from the boat that liked the very slow sweeps and pause
of the Surfish and attacked the lure just 3-4 meters away from the boat.
It was an amazing strike just in front of us !
It resulted in a beautiful Adriatic Bluefintuna of about 35kg (estimated)
that saved from a day with very very very hard tunas.
After the first day with the new Surfish Paulownia 220,getting a strike with
tunas almost impossible, I can only say that is a very promising lure.
We will see how the new Surfish will perform with easier conditions and tunas
a bit more aggressive ! I am very optimistic !
